What is the orbit?

The orbital cavities are bony sockets that house the eyeballs and their related structures (muscles, periorbital fat, etc.). All kinds of disorders can arise because of the variety of tissues housed.

Protection

The bony structure surrounding the eyeball protects the eye from external trauma.

Communication

It has certain posterior openings that allow the optic nerve to communicate directly to the brain.

Accommodating

The tear gland, responsible for producing tears to keep the surface of the eye properly hydrated.

ORBITAL DISORDERS

There are multiple disorders that can affect the orbit, the following of which are most common:

  • Preseptal and orbital cellulitis
  • Exophthalmos and thyroid-associated orbitopathy
  • Orbital inflammation
