DRY EYE
SYNDROME

eye dryness

What is eye dryness?

Eye dryness is a condition that affects the surface of the cornea or conjunctiva generally caused by lack or poor quality of lacrimal fluid produced by tear glands. Poor eye lubrication is uncomfortable, it involves damage and inflammation of the eye surface which could imply serious corneal damage.

Symptoms of eye dryness

It is easy to detect dry eyes since the symptoms are clearly visible. Patients experience eye irritation, burning sensation, eye redness, eye fatigue or watery eyes, although this last symptom might sound contradictory in terms of eye dryness. Lack of tears should not cause watery eyes but the “natural flooding” of the eye surface is often the body’s response to lack of lubrication.

Causes of eye dryness

The main cause of eye dryness is namely lack of tears or poor tear quality but, what are the underlying causes?

1

AGE

Ageing damages the cells of tear glands and decreases tear production.
2

HORMONAL CHANGES

Women are affected by hormonal changes that reduce tear production.
3

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS

Certain factors such as air conditioning or weather conditions may increase tear evaporation.
4

BLINKING LESS OFTEN

In the case of reading or working with computers.
5

EYE DISEASES

Medical conditions such as severe viral conjunctivitis and Sjögren’s syndrome.
6

CONTACT LENSES

Wearing contact lenses may also cause eye dryness.

PREVENTION OF
EYE DRYNESS

PREVENTION is unquestionably the most effective treatment. Certain measures help us prevent eye dryness, a common condition in elderly patients and women who experience hormonal changes. Preventive measures include:

  • Avoiding exposure to extreme air currents.
  • Wearing sunglasses to avoid exposure to dust, smoke or any external agents that affect or damage the eyes.
  • Increase of blinking frequency.
  • Avoiding dry environments. The use of humidifiers (available in pharmacies) is a recommended.

TREATMENT OF
EYE DRYNESS

Most common treatments for eye dryness include:

  • Regular use of artificial tears or eye ointments several times a day, especially at night.
  • Use of punctal plugs to avoid tear drainage.
  • Etiological treatment in case of underlying pathologies.

OTHER
TREATMENTS

Some cases require additional, more specific treatments such as:

  • Autologous serum.
  • Plasma rich in growth factors.
  • Pulse light (Dry eye laser).
  • LipiFlow®.
  • Amniotic membrane suturing.
  • Amniotic membrane suturing with PRGF-Endoret technology.
  • Limbal transplantation.
  • Therapeutic contact lens.
  • Tarsorrhaphy or narrowing of eyelids opening.

Dry Eye Unit – Clínica Rahhal

Aware of the fact that eye dryness is a frequent condition with different causes and treatments our clinic has created a special Dry Eye and Ocular Surface Unit to offer our patients the best solutions.

It is necessary to address the problem at source to obtain satisfactory outcomes, therefore Rahhal Clinic has the most advanced technology to analyse tear osmolarity, distribution and composition. The use of Keratograph® or LipiView® technologies allows the study of Meibomian glands that secrete oil to coat the surface of the eyes and keep the water component of tears from evaporating.

MEDICAL TEAM

The expertise of our medical team combined with the use of state-of-the-art technology guarantee the best results for our patients.

Are all types of eye dryness the same?

Although the results are eventually similar, eye dryness may have different forms. Causes vary from eyelid inflammation to corneal or tear gland diseases. Establishing the origin will help find the most effective treatment.

Is the same treatment effective in all cases?

Each eye has an underlying condition and not all treatments work for all cases. The fundamental option is the correct lubrication of the eye surface, but there are several ways to achieve that end and each case requires a specific approach. Besides, in some eyelid conditions surgery can provide solutions.

Can I suffer from eye dryness and have watery eyes?

Yes. In fact this is not an uncommon condition. It is necessary to differentiate basal tears (which provide hydration and nutrition) from reflex tears (those produced as a reaction to an external factor like strange objects in the eye). Excess tears in patients affected by eye dryness is not an increase of basal secretion, it is a reflex secretion as a response to an aggressive environment or condition. Reflex tears do not have the necessary biochemical properties to maintain a healthy condition of the eye.

Can dry eyes have serious consequences?

In most cases, eye dryness is just an indicator of reduced comfort and life quality since patients are affected by uncomfortable symptoms and mild photophobia (intolerance of light). However, depending on the cause and intensity, eye dryness might lead to serious vision problems, corneal scarring and significant thinning of corneal tissues.
