OCULOPLASTIC SURGERY

eye rejuvenation

What is oculoplastic surgery?

The eyelids and periocular area largely regulate our facial expression and are very sensitive to the passage of time. Within the field of ophthalmology, oculoplastic surgeons are specially trained to treat disorders in this area (such as trauma, degeneration and tumours) as well as related aesthetic problems as their proximity to the eye makes this area a highly specialised surgical field.

COSMETIC EYE ALTERATIONS

Aesthetic alterations that can appear in this area include:

  • Periorbital bags and excess fat.
  • Drooped eyelids or ptosis.
  • Blepharochasis or excess skin on the upper eyelids.
  • Benign cysts on the eyelids.
  • Expression lines.
  • Lack of brightness on the periocular skin and “tired eyes”.

Prevention

As in many processes, prevention is more important, and this is key in the periocular area as the skin and tissues surrounding the eye are very vulnerable. However, despite daily care, the passage of time leads to aesthetic defects for which there are a range of different treatment options with minimally invasive surgery.

Diet

Maintain a proper diet and hydration.

Sun exposure

Look after your skin, avoiding sun exposure.

Tobacco

Avoid tobacco consumption.

Sleep

Sleep for the required number of hours.

COSMETIC EYE TREATMENTS

There is a wide range of treatments that seek to rejuvenate and treat the eyelids and the periocular area. They can be used individually or in combination.

To determine which treatment is the most appropriate in each case, prior testing by an oculoplastic surgeon is essential. The most advanced treatments available include:

  • Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty): surgery that seeks to remove excess skin and fat from the upper and/or lower eyelids.
  • Canthoplasty: surgery to raise the outer angle of the eyelid to correct the “droopy eyes”.
  • Microneedling.
  • Botulinum toxin.

BLEPHAROPLASTY

How much time do I need to rest after surgery?

The procedure to remove what are commonly called “bags” does not affect the basic activities of daily life. However, the appearance of a haematoma in the area operated on (as in any other surgery) means that it is a good idea to wear sunglasses and many patients prefer to remain at home for a few days.

Is the eyeball touched during the procedure?

No. Despite its proximity to the eyeball, it is not touched during surgery. A good understanding of the periocular area is necessary to carry out the procedure with the utmost safety.

Will the surgery affect my vision?

As we said before, the eyeball is not touched during the surgical procedure. However, some patients experience an improvement in their vision because if the upper eyelid had “dropped” that would limit the patient’s field of vision and the patient would have “clearer” vision after the surgery.

Can this procedure be combined with other cosmetic treatments in the periocular area?

Of course. A blepharoplasty seeks to remove the “bags”, but it does not remove other related conditions. Our expert ophthalmologists in oculoplastic surgery will examine your particular case and offer the most comprehensive solution possible, which may include a combination of various treatments in some cases to achieve the best results possible.
